(MEN'S TENNIS) COSTA MESA, CALIF. -- Willamette University split the singles matches and won all three doubles matches, as the Bearcats defeated Orange Coast College (juco), 6-3, in an exhibition match on Wednesday, March 28. The NCAA does not count matches against junior colleges in official records. Willamette, which competes in NCAA Division III, remained 5-8 on the season.
The Bearcats moved out to a 3-0 lead with their victories in doubles. At the #1 position, Eric MacMillan (Jr., Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls HS) and Shaun Mihalick (Sr., Mukilteo, WA/Eastlake HS) downed OCC's Jonathan Kroopf and Patrick Lam, 8-3. At #2 doubles, Donovan LeDoux (Fr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) and Micah Mack (Fr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS) defeated Cem Bodur and Damien Liu, 8-2. Fitz Paccione (Jr., Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and Geoff Klein (Jr., Sagle, ID/Sandpoint HS) of WU received a strong challenge from Kevin Kordestani and Arthur Modyman at #3 doubles, before the Bearcats won, 8-6.
Kroopf defeated LeDoux at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Pirates also won #3 singles and #6 singles. Willamette registered close victories at all three of the remaining positions. MacMillan outlasted Lam at #2 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Mihaclick edged Kordestani at #4 singles, winning 7-5, 6-4, and Mack downed Bodur at #5 singles, 7-5, 6-4.
Willamette will take on Whittier College in Whittier, Calif., on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 3 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats were originally scheduled to play the Poets on Tuesday (March 27), but the match was rained out.
