Wong Wins First Round Match at Ojai Tournament

OJAI, CALIF. -- Willamette University freshman men's tennis player Joshua Wong (Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) defeated Victor Chien of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first round of the NCAA Division III bracket at the Ojai Valley Tournament on Friday, April 23. Wong downed Chien in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

With the opening round win, Wong improved his singles record to 15-5. He will take on #9 seed Jeffrey Tolman of Whitman College in the second round, starting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

In other first round matches already completed, Matthew Houser (Jr., Vancouver, WA/Evergreen HS) of Willamette lost to Tiago Hayashi of Westmont College in the Men's Individual Singles bracket and Cody Ferguson (So., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) was defeated by Shaun Herry from the University of California-Santa Cruz in the NCAA Division III bracket. Hayashi moved past Houser, 6-2, 6-0, and Herry held off Ferguson, 6-1, 6-3.

Michael Baumgartner (Fr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) of Willamette was still on the courts at of 11:45 a.m. in his first round match with #7-seeded Silvio Chiba from UC-Santa Cruz.

First round doubles matches will be played Friday afternoon. Willamette will be represented in doubles by the team of Wong and Ferguson as well as the team of Houser and Baumgartner.

The college men's brackets at the Ojai Valley Tournament will continue through Sunday, April 25.
