SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University won two of three doubles matches and took five of six singles matches, as the Bearcats defeated the University of Oregon Club Team, 7-2, in an exhibition on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Courthouse Tennis Center. Joshua Wong (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) led the way with wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles.
Wong prevailed in the #1 singles match against Justin Hartsuiker, 6-3, 6-2. Earlier, Wong combined with Cody Ferguson (Sr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) to win the top doubles match over Mark Leckband and Trevor Zaret, 8-0.
WU held a 2-1 lead at the end of the doubles. In addition to the win at #1 doubles, the Bearcats also claimed a win at #2 doubles. Garrett Vincent (So., Seattle, WA/Seattle Prep/Bellevue CC) and Devin Abney (Fr., Shoreline, WA/Shorecrest HS/U. of Redlands) earned the victory as they defeated Shiro Yamaguchi and Marc Leaf, 8-5.
The U of O Club won #3 doubles, with Hartsuiker and Terry Larson outlasting Jack Schreiber (Fr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) and Cameron Thompson (Jr., Torrance, CA/North Torrance HS) of Willamette, 9-7.
Led by Wong at the #1 position, the Bearcats won the top five singles matches. Ferguson downed Leckband at #2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, while Vincent held off Dexter Hoang at #3 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Will Cooper provided WU with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Terry Metler at #4 singles. Schreiber defeated Yamaguchi in the #5 singles match, 6-3, 6-2.
At #6 singles, Ben Fong with the U of O Club achieved a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Abney.
In an extra singles match, Will Agnew-Svoboda (So., Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) of Willamette defeated Zaret, 6-3, 6-1.
Willamette will open the regular season with a home match against Pacific University on Saturday, Feb. 25. Match time at the Willamette University Tennis Courts in set for 2 p.m. (PST).
