SALEM, ORE. -- Toby Krauel has resigned as the head coach of the Willamette University men's tennis team effective Aug. 3 following four years with the Bearcats. Krauel, who commuted from the Portland area to Salem, plans to spend more time with his family and focus on being a competitor in upcoming tennis tournaments.

Krauel will continue to be a USPTA certified tennis professional at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland. He also will continue to play competitive tennis. He recently won the Nike National 40s doubles tournament.

At Willamette, Krauel achieved an overall coaching record of 39-36 (.520) in dual matches. He led the Bearcats to Northwest Conference tournament berths during three of his four seasons (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11).

In 2011, the Bearcats earned a 13-6 overall record, including 11-1 in the NWC during the regular season. WU lost to Whitman College in the 2011 NWC Tournament finals. During a rebuilding year this past spring, Willamette was 3-13 overall, 3-9 in the NWC (6th place).

Krauel coached WU player Cody Ferguson '12 to the finals of the USTA/ITA Pacific Northwest Regional in singles in the fall of 2010.

Prior to working at Willamette, Krauel coached at two other universities. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Portland, in 1990-01. He was the head coach at Gonzaga University for seven years from 1993-94 through 1999-00. He graduated from Portland in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. He received a law degree from the Gonzaga School of Law in 1994.

Willamette will begin immediately to search for its next head coach of men's tennis. The Bearcats compete in NCAA Division III.
