Bearcats Compete in Round of 16 at USTA/ITA Championships

WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Three members of the Willamette University men's tennis team competed in the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Pacific Northwest Fall Championships on Sunday, Sept. 25. The tournament is being hosted by Whitman College.

Cody Ferguson (Sr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) , seeded #4, lost to Steven Roston of Whitman, 6-3, 6-2. Jack Schreiber (Fr.) was defeated by the tournament's #1 seed Conor Holton-Burke of Whitman, 6-2, 6-2. Garrett Vincent (So., Seattle, WA/Seattle Prep/Bellevue CC) took on #6-seeded Jeff Tolman of Whitman, with Tolman advancing, 6-3, 6-2.

Whitman filled seven of the eight spots in the quarterfinals. Four Missionaries advanced to the semifinals, set for Monday, Sept. 26. One semifinal will be played between Sam Sadeghi, one of several #9 seeds, and Andrew La Cava, seeded #2, while the other semifinal will feature Holton-Burke and Tolman.

In the doubles quarterfinals on Sunday, four teams from Whitman moved into the semifinals. La Cava and Tolman, the #1 seeds, defeated their own teammates, Adriel Borshansky and Will Huskey. Sadeghi and James Rivers defeated Preston Mann and Andrew Milton from George Fox University. Roston and Colton Malesovas moved past #7-seeded Peter Brown and Justin McClain of GFU. Holton-Burke and Matt Tesmond, the #2 seeds, downed #6-seeded Cody Levien and Zach Lyons of Linfield College.

The semifinals in doubles were set for Sunday evening, with the finals to be played on Monday.
