EUGENE, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated the University of Oregon Club team, 6-3, on Sunday Feb. 3 in an exhibitionmen's tennis match played at the Eugene Family YMCA.
In the winning effort, the Bearcats received several strong contributions throughout the singles matches. Sam Wexman (Fr., Tiburon, CA/Gamiscal HS) defeated Dexter Hoang, 7-5, 6-4, in #1 singles.
Jack Schreiber (So., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) was victorious in #2 singles, as he defeated Sei Shishido, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). Willamette also received a win at #4 singles, as Devin Abney (So., Shoreline, WA/Shorecrest HS/U. of Redlands) defeated Trevor Zaret, 6-4, 6-3. The U of O Club team won the #3, #5 and #6 singles matches.
Willamette swept all three doubles matches on the day. Wexman and Will Cooper (Jr., Gresham, OR/Centennial HS) combined to defeat Hoang and Ryan Nagamatsu, 8-4,in #1 doubles.
In #2 doubles, Schreiber and Abney handily beat Zaret and Shishido, 8-2, while Shrujan Kalidindi (Fr., Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista HS) and Gunnar Lee (Fr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School) capped off the sweep at #3 doubles, defeating Alex Worth and Sahil Diatin, 8-2.
The Bearcats' will travel to Walla Walla, Wash., for their next match, which will be against Northwest Conference opponent Whitman College on Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. (PST).
After traveling yet again to compete against Lewis & Clark College on Feb. 22, Willamette will host its first home match of the season on Feb. 23 against Pacific Lutheran University. That match is set to begin at 11 a.m. (PST).
