Lewis & Clark Sweeps Doubles, Cruises Past Willamette, 7-2

Abney, Lee Earn Singles Victories

SALEM, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark swept all three doubles matches and earned victories at four of the six singles spots to claim a 7-2 victory over Willamette University in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match at the Courthouse Tennis Center on Friday, March 7.

Lewis & Clark upped its record to 2-5 overall, 2-3 in the NWC, while Willamette fell to 1-6 overall, 1-4 in the NWC.

Devin Abney(Jr., Shoreline, WA/Shorecrest HS/Univ. of Redlands) and Gunnar Lee(So., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph HS) provided the Bearcats with their only points on the day, with both players earning tiebreak victories in singles matches.

At the #4 spot, Abney defeated Cameron Smith 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), while Lee claimed a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over L&C's Scott Monismith at #6 singles.

Elsewhere in singles play, the Pioneers' Michael Brewer defeated Sam Wexman(So., Tiburon, CA/Tamiscal HS) 6-1, 6-0 at the #1 position, Kevin Ross defeated Will Cooper(Sr., Gresham, OR/Centennial HS) 6-3, 6-2 at #2, Daniel Hahm beat Jack Schreiber(Jr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) 6-2, 6-2 at #3, and Blake Brash(So., Boise, ID/Boise HS) fell 6-1, 6-3 to Morgan Joyce at #5.

Lewis & Clark swept all three doubles matches, but Willamette kept every match close. At #2 doubles, Lee and Sam Wexmandropped a 9-8 (7-5) decision to the Pioneers' tandem of Ross and Joyce.

At the #1 spot, Brewer and Smith defeated Cooper and Abney, 8-5, while Brash andShrujan Kalidindi(So., Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista HS) fell 8-4 to Hahm and Parker Nichols at #3.

Willamette will return to action on March 15, taking on Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (PDT).
