Bruins Defeat Willamette in Final Match of Season for Bearcats

Schreiber Wins at #3 Singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) over Miyashiro

NEWBERG, Ore. -- George Fox University claimed wins in all three doubles matches and almost swept the singles matches to win 8-1 over Willamette University in Northwest Conference men's tennis action on Sunday, April 19.

GFU improved to 14-7 overall and to 9-3 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette concluded its season at 4-14 with a 4-8 record in the NWC.

Senior Jack Schreiber (Sr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School), playing in his final match for the Bearcats, picked up Willamette's only victory of the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win at #2 singles against Mitchell Miyashiro.

The match between Schreiber and Miyashiro was the final contest to be completed.

"Jack finished the season so strong, starting with his comeback win at Caltech (on March 25)," said WU Head Coach Rick Wood. "Today was another battle with both teams cheering every point."

At #1 doubles, Chace Stalcup and Chris Lilly of George Fox downed Shrujan Kalidindi and Gunnar Lee, 8-3. The Bruins added wins at #2 and #3 doubles for a 3-0 lead.

The close contest at #3 singles represented one of two tight match-ups. At #4 singles, Nicholas Grafton of George Fox outlasted Blake Brash (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) of Willamette in a super tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets. Grafton won 6-0, 3-6, 10-5.
