Bearcats Shut Down Community Colleges of Spokane in Exhibition Match, 9-0

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Willamette University men's tennis team swept all of the singles and doubles matches against Community Colleges of Spokane in a 9-0 victory on Saturday, Feb. 18 during an exhibition match at the Whitman College Indoor Courts.

Willamette's win-loss record for the season did not change since the NCAA does not count results against two-year colleges.

The Bearcats began the match by winning in doubles. At #1 doubles, Aaron Schechter (So., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) and Gunnar Lee (Sr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School) of WU downed Sean Singco and Blake Lynd, 8-3.

In the #2 doubles match, Hunter Yee (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) and Colin Fisher (Fr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) defeated Kyle Smithgall and Conrad Provan frmo CC of Spokane, 8-5. Willamette's #3 doubles team of Derek Lund (Jr., Helena, MT/Capital HS) and Samuel Rowe (Jr./So., Andover, MA/Andover HS) cruised past Niamh Lakewolf and Christian Flannery, 8-1.

Schechter prevailed at #1 singles against Singco, 6-4, 6-2. At #2 singles, Lee outscored Smithgall, 6-1, 6-3.

The closest singles match was at the #3 position, where Yee won for the Bearcats in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set. Yee defeated Lynd, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Colin Fisher (Fr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) of WU took #4 singles over Provan, 6-2, 6-4. In the #5 singles match, Lund downed Lakewolf, 6-2, 6-2. Jesse Mackinney (Jr., Arcata, CA/Northcoast Prep and Performing Arts Academy) won #6 singles, 6-4, 6-1, against Flannery.

The Bearcats will remain in Walla Walla to take on Northwest Conference rival Whitman College on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. (PST). Whitman is ranked #24 in NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Blues are ranked #6 in the West Region.
