Boxers Upend Bearcats as Willamette Concludes Season in Men's Tennis

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The Willamette University men's tennis teams completed the 2016-17 season with a Northwest Conference match at Pacific University on Saturday, April 15. The Boxers, defeated the Bearcats, 9-0, in action at the Holce Tennis Courts.

Pacific, ranked #10 in the West Region of NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 11-6 overall, 8-3 in the NWC. Willamette ended the season at 2-12, including 2-10 in the NWC.

The Boxers built a 3-0 lead in doubles. In the #1 match, Clark Wininger and Oscar Wight of Pacific downed Aaron Schechter (So., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) and Gunnar Lee (Sr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School) of WU, 8-0. At #2 doubles, Reuben Mulhern and Wesley Upton moved past Colin Fisher (Fr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) and Hunter Yee (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School), 8-1.

The #3 doubles match was won by Pacific's team of Rayden Murata and Ford Nakagawa, who defeated Derek Lund (Jr., Helena, MT/Capital HS) and Douglas Hochmuth (Sr./So., Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd HS), 8-3.

Pacific earned straight-set wins throughout the singles matches. At #1 singles, Wininger prevailed against Lee, 6-1, 6-1. In #2 singles, Josh Bernstein edged out Schechter in the first set, 7-5, and then took the second set, 6-1.

Other winners in singles for the Boxers were Sage Katayama at #3 singles, Sean Murphy at #4 singles, Griffin Fraser at #5 singles and Upton at #6 singles.
