Kabacy Wins at #1 Singles, as Bearcats Lose to Pioneers, 8-1

SALEM, Ore. -- Andrew Kabacy (Grad., Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS) of Willamette University won in straight sets at #1 singles against Lewis & Clark College on Sunday, March 3 during a Northwest Conference men's tennis match at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club, but the Pioneers were victorious in the overall match, 8-1. L&C advanced its record to 6-3 overall, 1-1 in the NWC. Willamette mvoed to 0-7 overall, 0-2 in the NWC.

Kabacy won the #1 singles match against Noah Sutin of L&C, 6-2, 6-4. Quentin Nigbur (Sr., Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) narrowly missed winning at #2 singles, which went into a super tie-breaker. Nigbur won the first set, 6-4, while Kai Wills won the second set for the Pioneers, 6-2. Wills prevailed in the super tie-breaker 10-6.

The top doubles match was very competitive between the teams of Kabacy and Nigbur for WU and Joey Lyon and Wade McDermott for L&C. Lyon and McDermott eventually won in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7-0). At #2 doubles, Sutin and Landon Cronin won for the Pioneers, 8-2, against AJ Avansino (So., Reno, NV/Reno HS) and Zack Olander (Fr., Bend, OR/Summit HS). At #3 doubles, Wills and Matt Chio defeated Andre Lief (So., Anchorage, AK/West Anchorage HS) and Spencer Chase (So., Silverton, OR/Silverton HS) of WU, 8-3.

Lewis & Clark also won from #3 through #6 singles. The winning players were Chio at #3, Lyon at #4, McDermott at #5, and Miles Stone at #6.

The Bearcats will take on the University of Puget Sound on Friday, March 8. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST.
