Bearcats Complete Winter Training in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. -- The Willamette University swimming teams have returned to Salem, Ore., following a week of training in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In addition to practicing, the Bearcats also competed in the 2010 CSCAA Bob Mowerson Swim Meet on Jan. 7. The meet was held in Ford Lauderdale on a metric long course.

Highlights of the Meet for Willamette were:

Men
* Ian McGahan took second place in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 3:04.66. Nikolai Sefkenko from the College of Staten Island won the event in 2:16.12.

Women
* Jenna Larrow placed eighth in the 400-meter freestyle. Her time was 5:16.95.
* Gwen Schulze took fifth, Kara Koetje finished sixth and Janelle Higashida placed seventh in the 200-meter individual medley. Schulze registered a time of 2:53.05, while Koetje completed the race in 2:56.55 and Higashida was timed at 2:58.50.
* Lauren Ballinger finished 15th in the 50-meter freestyle. Her time was 31.33 seconds. The event was won by Kelly Connolly of Clarion University, who achieved a time of 28.31 seconds.

The Bearcats return to action on Friday, Jan. 15 with a home meet against Whitworth University. Game time at the Willamette Natatorium is set for 6 p.m. (PST). Willamette also will compete at home on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they are scheduled to host Whitman College at 1 p.m. (PST).
