Bearcats Place Second at NWC Spring Classic

Women's Golf Moment of the Year

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's golf team overcame high winds on both days to tie for second place at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic, played April 5-6 at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, Wash. It was a tremendous moment in a solid season for the Bearcats.

The course was especially windy on the second day, when gusts were between 15 and 25 miles per hour.

Taneesh Sra (So., Fremont, CA/Mission San Jose HS) successfully managed the wind to finish in second place at 165. She shot an 82 in the first round and an 83 in the second round, to trail only Sydney Maluenda from George Fox University. Maluenda shot an impressive 77-76--153 to pull away from the field.

Mckenzie Weinhold (Sr., Jr. elig., Placerville, CA/El Dorado HS/Univ. of Nevada-Reno) of Willamette tied for fifth place at 168. Weinhold carded am 83 int he first round and followed up with an 85.

Willamette and Whitworth matched scores in each round to tie for second place. Both teams shot 339 in the first round and 351 in the second round to finish at 690. George Fox won the tournament with a team score of 660 (323-337).

LettaJoe Gallup (Jr., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS) took 15th place for the Bearcats out of the 43 golfers competing. She shot 177 (88-89). Also for Willamette, Jessi Weaver (Fr., Lincoln City, OR/Taft HS) shot 180 (86-94) and Elise Levy (So., Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue HS) carded 189 (93-96).

The Bearcats placed fourth in the final NWC standings later in the spring, after results from the NWC Fall Classic, NWC Spring Classic and NWC Tournament were combined in a point system used to determine the overall champion. George Fox, which placed second at the Fall Classic before winning the final two tournaments, claimed the NWC title.

Sra and Weinhold were named Second Team All-NWC based on their efforts at all three tournaments. Weinhold previously earned Second Team All-NWC honors in 2012, while Sra received Second Team All-NWC recognition in 2013.

Taneesh Sra placed second at the NWC Spring Classic. Later in the spring, she earned Second Team All-NWC honors.
