Shaw Earns Two Goals and an Assist in 15-9 Loss to Hope (Mich.)

SALEM, Ore. -- Cedric Shaw (Fy., MID, Jamul, CA/Valhalla HS) of Willamette University scored two goals and provided one assist, but visiting Hope College (Mich). defeated the Bearcats, 15-9, at Sparks Field on Tuesday, March 12. Claire Kisielnicki (So., ATT, Manitou Springs, CO/Manitou Springs HS) and Lily Bachiochi (Jr., ATT, Henderson, NV/Coronado HS) each added two goals for the Bearcats. Julia Brown led the Flying Dutch with four goals and two assists.

Willamette moved to 3-1 with the loss. Hope evened its record at 2-2.

Scoring one goal each for Willamette were Kendyl Jennings (Sr., MID, Keizer, OR/McNary HS), Shea Richardson-Pepper (Jr., DEF/MID, San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS), and Brooklynn Pearl (So., MID, Eugene, OR/Willamette HS. Following Brown on Hope's goal-scoring chart were Allysa Segura with three goals and Juli Kirkpatrick with two goals and one assist. Molly Frederickson earned four assists for the Flying Dutch.

The Bearcats scored the game's opening goal with 9:22 remaining in the first quarter on a shot by Kisielnicki. Hope answered quickly with a goal on a free-position shot by Segura at 8:40 to tie the score. A goal at the 7:46 mark from Caleigh Randall gave the Flying Dutch a 2-1 lead. Shaw earned the ensuing draw control, went down the field, and scored for Willamette with 7:31 on the clock. Kristen Szost scored at 6:24 to give Hope a 3-2 advantage.

Neither team scored during the rest of the first quarter, but Segura hit the net with her second goal with 13:21 left in the second quarter. It was a player-advantage goal.

Hope tacked on four even-strength goals, ending with one by Segura, for an 8-2 lead with 1:06 to go in the half. Frederickson was issued a green card for the Flying Dutch with 50 seconds to play, which helped set up a player-advantage goal by Kisielnicki with 12 seconds remaining. It was Kisielnicki's 21st goal of the season. WU trailed 8-3 at the break.

Brown scored a player-advantage goal with 14:18 left in the third quarter and scored again at 13:32 to increase Hope's margin to 10-3. Frederickson recorded assists on both goals. Willamette battled back within 10-6 on consecutive goals by three Bearcats. Bachiochi scored on a free-position shot at 10:10, Jennings added a player-advantage goal at 7:42, and Shaw scored on a free-position shot at 6:25. The final two goals of the third quarter went to Hope on shots by Bella Lafranca and Stella Bottum for a 12-6 lead.

Willamette and Hope each scored three goals in the fourth quarter. Bachiochi registered a goal for Willamette at 9:11 before the Flying Dutch hit the next three times for a 15-7 lead. The Bearcats scored twice during a non-releasable yellow card (Hope's fourth yellow card of the game) late in the contest, on a goal by Pearl with 2:21 left and a goal by Richardson-Pepper with 1:23 to play.

The Bearcats held a 31-26 lead in total shots, but both teams placed 21 shots on target. The Flying Dutch went 3 of 4 on free-position shots, while the Bearcats finished 3 of 8. Willamette held a 22-20 edge in ground balls and a 13-8 advantage in caused turnovers.

Willamette goalkeeper Olivia Austin (Fy., GK, San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS) supplied the Bearcats with six saves. Goalie Maddie Yakes of Hope accumulated 12 saves. Eight of the saves by Yakes were in the second half, when Hope outscored WU by a slim 7-6 margin.
