Pomona-Pitzer Downs Bearcats, 2-0, at Slugfest Tournament

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. -- Pomona-Pitzer defeated Willamette University, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Slugfest Tournament, hosted by the University of California-Santa Cruz. The Sagehens upped their record to 2-0-1, while the Bearcats dropped to 2-1 on the season.

Pomona-Pitzer took the lead at 26:21 on an unassisted goal by Charlotte Fisken. Fisken shot from 18 yards and placed the ball into the top of the net.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime, but the Sagehens extended their advantage to 2-0 just over three minutes into the second half, when Allie Tao scored at 48:13. Nicole Quilliam earned an assist on the play, as she set up Tao for a 6-yard shot.

For the game, Pomona-Pitzer achieved a 7-6 margin in total shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Sagehens finished with three corner kicks, while WU took one corner kick.

Annie Wedel, the Sagehens' goalie, earned two saves and the shutout, while playing all 90 minutes. Nicole Price (Sr, GK, Auburn, WA/Thomas Jefferson HS), who started in goal for Willamette, garnered three saves before leaving the game at 76:25. Liberty Siegle (So., GK, Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) played the final 13:36 for the Bearcats.

Jill Phillips (So., MF, Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) and Sarah Desautels (Jr., F/MF, Snohomish, WA/Glacier Peak HS) each took two shots for the Bearcats. Mary Stafford was credited with two shots for Pomona-Pitzer.

Three Bearcats played all 90 minutes -- Phillips, Alyssa Perreault (So., D, Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn HS) and Brenna McGown (Jr., D, Boise, ID/Boise HS)/

Willamette, now 1-1 at the Slugfest, will conclude the tournament by taking on the host UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs on Monday, Sept. 9. Game time at Lower East Field is set for 9:30 a.m. (PDT).
