Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Defeats Willamette 1-0 in Two Overtimes

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Megan Lo scored a goal with 4:30 left in the second overtime period to send Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a 1-0 win over Willamette University in a women's soccer game on Sunday, Sept. 13. The Athenas upped their record to 2-2-1, while the Bearcats fell to 0-3-1.

Despite the loss, Willamette's defense continued to play well. The Bearcats have held three of their four opponents to a single goal or less.

The goal by Lo was unassisted as she set up her own opportunity before shooting. It was her first goal of the season.

CMS outshot Willamette 26-12 for the game and  earned a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Athenas outhsot the Bearcats 8-1 during the two overtime periods.

Early in the game, two shots for CMS hit the post. Laynee Laube took a shot at 1:09 that went off the post, and Katelyn Faust hit the post at 2:26. The Athenas created eight shots in the first half, including five in the first 18 minutes.

WU took five shots in the opening half and forced Claremont goalkeeper Kelly McConnell to make four saves. Emily Sewall (Jr., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) of WU registered three saves in the first 45 minutes.

McConnell of CMS stopped shots by Emma Sanders (Jr., M, Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS), Kelsey Walker (So., M/GK, Westerville, OH/Westerville North HS), Karmen Chavez-Sam (Fr., D, Eastvale, CA/Eleanor Roosevelt HS) and Veronica Ewers (Sr., F, Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) in the first half. The shot by Ewers at 43:20 was the final shot by either team prior to the halftime break.

The Athenas produced 10 shots in the second half, while Willamette added six. Sewall recorded seven saves over the second 45 minutes and added four saves in overtime. She finished with a career-high 14 saves. McConnell earned two saves in the second half and made six saves overall.

Ewers and Walker each took three shots. All three of Ewer's shots were on goal. In the second half, Ewers achieved a shot at 74:17 that was cleared by defender Amy Johnson. Ewers added a shot at 82:00 that was saved by McConnell. Willamette earned a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Faust and Makella Brems recorded seven shots apiece for the Athenas. Brems placed five shots on goal, while Faust put three shots on target.

Willamette will host Linfield College in the Northwest Conference opener on Wednseday, Sept. 16. Game time at Sparks Field is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
