Borngasser Makes 9 Saves, but Bearcats Fall to Unbeaten Loggers, 3-0

SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University and the University of Puget Sound were in a scoreless tie at halftime of their Northwest Conference women's soccer game on Saturday, Oct. 2, but the undefeated Loggers scored three goals in the second half for a 3-0 win at Sparks Field. WU goalkeeper Sam Borngasser (Fy., Grants Pass, OR/Grants Pass HS) earned nine saves during the game. Puget Sound improved to 8-0-1 on the season, 4-0-1 in the NWC. Willamette ended the game with a 3-6-0 record, 2-3-0 in the NWC.

The scoreless first half ended with Puget Sound holding a 7-4 advantage in total shots. Borngasser registered three saves during the first 45 minutes.

Puget Sound took a 1-0 lead at 50:57 on a goal by Genny Jilka, who shot from 10 yards on the left side, sending the ball into the lower right portion of the goal. Tess Garden earned an assist on the play. Just over seven minutes late at 58:15, the Loggers doubled the margin with an unassisted goal by Kina Sarrao from six yards out. The ball was deflected by Borngasser before it crossed the goal line low and in the middle of the net.

Kylee Roath completed the scoring for the Loggers at 87:47. Roath shot from 40 yards into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Loggers outshot Willamette 16-7 in the second half and ended the game with a 23-11 edge in total shots. Puget Sound held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Serrao took four shots and place three of them on targes. Emily O'Neil also recorded four shots for the Loggers, including one shot on goal. Puget Sound goalie Chaylea Tome made four saves while earning the shutout.

Lydia Emory (Fy., F, Tigard, OR/Tigard HS) topped Willamette's roster with five total shots and three shots on goal. Sydney Wilson (Sr., M, Olympia, WA/Capital HS) and Paige Murray (Sr., D, Olympia, WA/Capital HS) each took two shots.

Willamette will remain at home to take on Pacific Lutheran University in NWC action on Sunday, Oct. 3. Game time at Spark Field is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PDT).
