(WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Whitman College won a close match at #1 doubles on Sunday, Feb. 18, as Margo Lentz and Katie Collier outlasted Willamette Universitys Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) and Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS), 9-7. The win by Lentz and Collier, plus a win at #2 doubles, started the Missionaries on their way to a 7-2 team victory over the Bearcats at the Courthouse Tennis Club. Whitman improved to 3-2, including 1-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 1-3 overall, 1-1 in the NWC.
Hadley Debree and Divneet Kaur of Whitman triumphed at #2 doubles by an 8-3 score over Susan Butler (Sr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) and Becca Younger (So., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep). Willamette claimed a win at #3 doubles when Alyssa Morrison (Fr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) and Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) defeated Emily Smith and Katie Oost, 8-5.
Whitman won five of six singles matches, led by Debrees victory over Kam at the #1 position, 6-3, 6-0. The only win by the Bearcats in singles action was earned by Anderson, who battled past Lentz, 6-3, 6-4, at #3 singles. The closest match of the day was at #4 singles, where Smith of Whitman and Morrison of Willamette played a pair of tie-breakers in the first two sets, then added a 10-point tie-breaker to decide the match. Smith prevailed 7-6 (7-0), 6-7 (2-7), 10-3.
Willamette will return to the Courthouse Tennis Club on Friday, Feb. 23, to take on Pacific University in a Northwest Conference match. The action starts at 12 p.m. (PST)
