Poltavski Named NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week

Wins Every Match during Week, Improves to 12-2 in Singles and 13-1 in Doubles

SALEM, ORE. -- Denise Poltavski (Jr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) from Willamette University has been chosen Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in matches played on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19.

Poltavski went 2-0 at #2 singles and 2-0 at #1 doubles. In singles, she defeated Saryn Mooney of Whitworth, 6-3, 6-4, and downed Allie Wallin of Whitman, 6-2, 6-2. Poltavski concluded the regular season with a 12-2 singles record, including 10-2 in the NWC.

In doubles, Poltavski and teammate Sabrina Gutierrez (Sr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) downed Mooney and Taylor Pena of Whitworth, 8-3, to open the weekend. On Saturday, the Willamette pair defeated Whitman's team of Courtney Lawless and Madison Webster, 8-4. Poltavksi and Gutierrez are 13-1 in doubles, with an 11-1 record in NWC action.

"Denise has had a great year in both singles and doubles," said Willamette Head Coach Becky Roberts.

The Willamette women's tennis team finished 5-9 overall and 3-9 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats lost to Whitworth, 7-2, and to Whitman, 6-3, last weekend.

Although the dual match portion of Willamette's schedule has concluded, Poltavksi and Gutierrez will compete in singles and doubles at the prestigious Ojai Tournament in Southern California later this week. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 24 and will continue through Sunday, April 27.

Denise Poltavski won both of her matches in singles and also went 2-0 in doubles last week.
