Suzuki and Groener Top Lewis & Clark in #1 Doubles

SALEM, Ore. – The Willamette University women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to visiting Lewis & Clark College in a non-conference match-up on Saturday, April 6. The match was played at the Salem Tennis & Swim Club.

Richelle Suzuki (Jr., Mililani, HI/Mililani HS) and Anika Groener (Sr., Bend, OR/Summit HS) earned the point with a win at #1 doubles over Susanna Anand and Seraphin Vossen, 8-7 (8-6 in the tie-breaker). Anand claimed the top singles flight while Groener challenged Vossen at number two, falling 6-3, 6-2.

Alexa de Crinis (So., Makawoa, HI/Seabury Hall School) and Ruby Thompson (Gr., Bay City, OR/Tillamook HS) battled at second doubles, falling 8-5. Suzuki and Eva Lief (Fy., Anchorage, AK/West Anchorage HS) both had strong first sets at third and fourth singles but were unable to claim the points.

Lewis & Clark improved to 4-8 on the season. The Bearcats slipped to 3-11 overall. Willamette returns to Northwest Conference action on Sunday, April 7, traveling to Forest Grove, Oregon, to face Pacific University. The opening matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PDT.
