
The Northwest Conference announced the 2023-2024 All-NWC Scholar-Athletes including 142 Bearcats. Jack Boydell (Men's Basketball, Sonoma, CA/Sonoma Valley HS) and Shyla Sato (Women's Volleyball, Honolulu, HI/Mid-Pacific Institute) were honored as First Team Scholar-Athletes .
First Team honors the top male student-athlete and the top female student-athlete from each NWC institution, based on athletic success, academic accomplishments, and community service.
Other NWC Scholar-Athlete First Team selections for 2023-24 were Peter Weiss and Alison Takamiya (George Fox University), Dylan Souza and Kate Milne (Lewis & Clark College), Kaili Saathof and Jacob Slifka (Linfield University), Annie Berry and Lucas Winkler (Pacific University), Halle Hetzler and Ryan Stracke (Pacific Lutheran University), Allison Goodell and Levi Buck (University of Puget Sound), Erin McKinney and Julien Hernandez (Whitman College), Amelia Hewson and Atticus Templeton (Whitworth University).
Jack Boydell
A member of the men's basketball team at Willamette University, Jack Boydell received the 2024 J.H. Booth Award from Willamette University. In the 2023-24 season, Boydell achieved the record for career three-point field goals, ranking 24th in NCAA Division III. Boydell also had a program leading 12 three-point baskets.
An economics and data science major, Boydell achieved a 3.97 combined graduate and undergraduate cumulative grade point average and was recognized with Willamette College Honors during all semesters. He was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa, earned the Atkinson Graduate School of Management MBA Leadership Award and top GPA award, was named CSC Academic All-District in 2023 and 2024, and was named to the NABC Honors Court in 2022 and 2023. On campus, Boydell served as a campus ambassador, business teaching and research assistant, and as an academic tutor. In his community, he volunteered at Church in the Park.
Shyla Sato
A five-year member of the women's volleyball team at Willamette University, Shyla Sato played in all 85 sets of the 2023 season, recording 107 total service aces and earning second team All-NWC honors. She led the team in digs with 5.72 per set, also ranking 20th in NCAA Division III. After the 2023 season, Sato ranks 6th in the nation in active career digs, also holding the career digs total and career digs average per set/game record for Willamette University.
A psychology major, Sato earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.85. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology in December 2023, was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma in 2022, received CSC Academic All-District honors in 2022 and 2023, and on the Willamette University Archives Collection in 2022.At Willamette, she was a member of the Annual Hawai'i Club Lu'au, a Goudy Food Committee member, volunteered at Willamette's opening day helping freshman move onto campus, and served as a representative for the psychology department. In her community, Sato completed an internship with Family Building Blocks as a therapeutic classroom intern, volunteered with the Global Day of Service, and was a Halau member with the Ka Wai Kahe Lani Malie Olapa Class.

In order to earn NWC Scholar-Athlete recognition, a student-athlete needed at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. In addition, each athlete had to participate in a full season on a varsity team this past year.
