WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the 12th inning to defeat Willamette University, 7-6, in the first game of a doubleheader at Borleske Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 21. The Bearcats earned a split of the doubleheader with a 6-3 victory over the Missionaries in the second game.

The first game of the twinbill completed a three-game Northwest Conference series between the teams, while the second half of the doubleheader was a non-conference game. Whitman ended the day at 2-1 in the NWC, with Willamette at 1-2. The Missionaries fell to 3-9 overall following the second game, while the Bearcats evened their overall record at 6-6.

Willamette and Whitman have played each other five times this season. The Bearcats are 3-2 against the Missionaries.

The Bearcats left two runners on base in the eighth inning. WU also stranded two runners in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings. In the 11th, the Bearcats had the bases loaded with no outs, but a fielder's choice led to an out at home plate, and the Missionaries ended the inning with a double play on a line drive to second base.

Even so, WU tallied two runs in the top of the 12th for a 6-4 advantage. Parra singled, Conway was hit by a pitch, and Connor Bailey (Fr., OF, San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS) walked. Parra reached home on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Paguio (Fr., INF, Stevenson Ranch, CA/West Ranch HS).

After Jake Wishart struck out for the second out of the inning, Vela and Cole Edwards walked, allowing Tyler to score. Zimmer followed with a two-run single to left field, as Whitman won 7-6.
