Willamette and Pomona-Pitzer Split Doubleheader as Joyner Earns Third Save

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Willamette University and Pomona-Pitzer College (Calif.) split a baseball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11, as the Sagehens edged the Bearcats 2-1 in the first game and WU won the second game 9-4. Layton Wagner (Sr., RHP/INF, Boise, ID/Timberline HS) went 4 for 9 on offense for the Bearcats during the twinbill and also pitched six strong innings in the first game. Willamette closer Brady Joyner (Jr., RHP, Las Vegas, NV/Shadow Ridge HS) pitched the final three innings of the second game to earn his third save of the season.

The Bearcats completed the two games with a 3-2 overall record. Pomona-Pitzer, which began the day undefeated, ended the afternoon with a 4-1 record. Willamette will play the Sagehens in the final game of the weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 12. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (PST).

In the opener, Jeff Hoffman (Jr., 3B, Salida, CA/Joseph A. Grigori HS) of Willamette blasted a solo home run as the second batter in the top of the first inning. The Sagehens rallied for the narrow win by plating two unearned runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two errors.

Wagner was 3 for 5 at the plate for the Bearcats in the second game, while providing two runs and two RBIs. He drove in one run in the first inning to give WU an early lead. Later, he singled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to send home Clint Walker (Sr., CF, Rocklin, CA/Rocklin HS) with the first of four runs during the stanza, as the Bearcats extended a 5-4 lead to 9-4. Joyner's save moved him into a tie for third on Willamette's all-time list with 12 career saves. He it tied with Chris Hopton (1992-93).

"We pitched well today and had some timely hitting in game 2," Willamette Head Baseball Coach Aaron Swick said. "Brady was huge at the end of the game to steal it."

The Bearcats used five pitchers during the doubleheader. They combined to allow just six runs -- four earned -- while striking out a total of 18 batters and limiting the Sagehens to 11 hits.
