Bearcats Place 6th, Davis Finishes 6th, at Collegiate Open in Men's Golf

DuPONT, Wash. -- Willamette University earned sixth place in the team standings and Bearcat men's golfer Austin Davis (So., Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) placed sixth on the individual leaderboard, as Pacific Lutheran University's Collegiate Open ended on Sunday, Sept. 15 at The Home Course. University of the Fraser Valley (Canada) won the team championship with a 36-hole total of 13-under-par 583.

Fraser Valley shot 278 in the first round on Saturday, and then shot 285 in the second round on Sunday. The Cascade registered the low team score each day to win by 20 strokes. Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth University tied for second at 583, as PLU shot 294-289 and Whitworth carded 288-295. Grays Harbor College (Wash.) was fourth at 585 (286-299) and Spokane Community College (Wash.) was fifth at 601 (297-304).

Willamette finished sixth overall at 602 (301-301), just one stroke behind Spokane CC. University of Puget Sound was seventh at 604 (290-314). Bellevue College (Wash.) and Northwest Christian University (Ore.) tied for eighth at 605. Bellevue shot 304 and 301, while NCU claimed rounds of 303 and 302. Northwest Christian's "B" team was 10th at 609 (305-304), with Southwestern Oregon Community College in 11th at 616 (309-307) and Whitman College in 12th at 620 (314-306).

Travis Bossio of Grays Harbor earned the individual title at 8-under-par 136. Bossio carded a 66 to tie for the lead after 18 holes on Saturday, and then shot a 70 in the second round. His margin of victory was two shots. Jared Beals of PLU and Halen Davis of Fraser Valley tied for second place at 138. Beals shot 66-72 and Davis shot 69-69.

Two golfers from Fraser Valley -- Wyatt Brook and Zach Olson -- tied for fourth place at 141. Brook carded 70-71, while Olson shot 68-73. Davis and Tyler Cassell of Grays Harbor tied for sixth place at 142, with Davis attaining scores of 70-72, and Cassell logging back-to-back rounds of 71.

A three-way tie for eighth place completed the top 10. The tie for eighth went to Kyle Claggett from Fraser Valley, plus Whitworth golfers Reilly Hegarty and Sam Stiles. All three shot 143, with Claggett at 71-72, Hegarty at 70-73, and Stiles at 73-70.

Davis was one of five golfers forming Willamette's team. Alex Weirth (Fy., Port Orchard, WA/Crosspoint Academy) of Willamette took 13th place at 146 on the strength of two rounds at 73. Andrew Kibbee (So., Kenmore, WA/Bothell HS) registered a score of 155 (79-76), Tyler Shreve (So., Buffalo, WY/Buffalo HS) shot 159 (79-80), and Carlos Cortes Dequidt (Fy., San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines HS) shot 178 (90-88).

The Bearcats will compete at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by the University of Redlands on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22. The tournament will be held at The S Club in Rancho Mirage, California.
