Pacific Lutheran Defeats Bearcats, 5-0

TACOMA, WASH. -- Mike Ferguson scored two goals and Jason Bjorgo earned two assists, as Pacific Lutheran University defeated visiting Willamette University, 5-0, on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the PLU Soccer Field. The Lutes improved to 6-5 on the season, 4-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette fell to 2-8-1 overall, 0-6 in the NWC.

PLU tallied three goals in the first 32 minutes, then added two goals in the second half. Ferguson recorded the game's first two tallies, as he hit the net at 16:18 and again at 20:55. Bjorgo assisted on the first goal. The second goal was unassisted.

The Lutes increased the lead to 3-0 on a goal by Trevor Jacka at 31:44. Bjorgo and Derek Karamatic were credited with assists on the play.

Derek MacLean scored next at 52:48 on a 6-yard header that was assisted by Brennan Brown. Karamatic registered the final goal at 77:39 on an unassisted shot.

PLU finished the game with an 18-7 edge in total shots. The five goals were PLU's only shots on goal. Willamette finished with two shots on goal, including a 30-yard shot by senior Michael Rodrigues (MF, Beaverton, OR/Southridge HS) that hit the crossbar and bounced over with about 30 minutes left.

Daniel Mangum and Brian Kostol shared goalkeeping duties for PLU. Mangum, who earned the win, registered one save. Kostol also recorded one save for the Lutes in 33:09 in the nets. WU goalkeeper Mark Bennett (So., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) was not credited with a save during the game, as he fell to 0-2 on the season.

The game featured 38 fouls, with 21 on PLU and 17 on Willamette. There were six yellow cards issued -- four on PLU and two on Willamette -- all in the first 49 minutes.

Willamette plays again on Sunday, Oct. 7, when the Bearcats will host Pacific University as part of Parents and Family Weekend. Kickoff at Sparks Field is set for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
