Pirates Shut Out Bearcats, 2-0, in Northwest Conference

SPOKANE, WASH. -- Skye Henderson and John Prugh tallied one goal apiece, leading Whitworth University to a 2-0 victory over Willamette University in a Northwest Conference game on Sunday, Oct. 21. Whitworth scored one goal in each half, as the Pirates upped their record to 12-2-1 overall, including 10-1-0 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell to 2-12-2 overall, 0-10-1 in the NWC.

Henderson registered the game's first goal at 26:12. He was assisted by Ryan Powers and Keith Kirsch. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Whitworth gained an insurance goal at 50:54 on a shot taken by Prugh from the left side. His shot went low and toward the right post. Brent Zahn and Kirsch were credited with assists on the play.

The Pirates held a 30-6 margin in total shots, including 17-2 in the second half. Whitworth also achieved an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. The Pirates earned eight corner kicks, seven in the first half, and did not allow a corner kick to Willamette during the game.

Although WU managed just six shots, four were directed on goal. Conor Costigan (Fr., F, Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) took tow of Willamette's shots on the goal. Trevor Jones (Sr., MF, Portland, OR/Grant HS) and Austin Buell (Sr., D, Ashland, OR/Ashland HS) each took one shot on goal for the Bearcats.

Prugh led all players with four shots on goal. Willamette goalkeeper Scott Klein (Fr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City HS) provided the Bearcats with eight saves. Whitworth's goalie, Scott Barnum, made four saves in just over 81 minutes, before giving way to back-up 'keeper Lance Beck.

Willamette will play at home in its next game on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the Bearcats will host nearby rival Linfield College. Game time at Sparks Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PDT).
