Bearcats Lose to Puget Sound in Season Finale, 2-0

TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound used two goals in the first half to defeat visiting Willamette University, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference game on Saturday, Nov. 8. UPS advanced its record to 10-7-2 overall, 8-4-2 in the NWC. Willamette completed its season at 3-14-1, including 2-11-1 in the NWC.

Kyle Benson scored at 8:46 and Chris Shaw tallied a goal at 29:59 for the Loggers. Benson's goal was earned with an assist from Kyle Johnson. Shaw scored the Loggers' second goal after receiving a pass from Benson.

Puget Sound gained a 12-8 advantage in total shots during the game. The Loggers also achieved a 6-2 margin in shots on goal and registered seven corner kicks, compared to one corner for the Bearcats.

Mark Bennett (Sr., GK, Salt Lake City, UT/West HS), who played all 90 minutes in goal for Willamette, finished with three saves. A WU defender also blocked a shot near the goal line. Greg Saetrum of UPS made two saves and earned the shutout.

For the Bearcats, Conor Costigan (So., MF, Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS), Nick Forbes (Sr., F, Carbondale, CO/Colorado Rocky Mountain School) and Sam Hodder (Sr., MF/F, Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep) recorded two shots apiece. Forbes and Hodder each earned one shot on goal.

The game was played relatively free of fouls. Willamette was called for a modest total of six fouls, while Puget Sound finished with only three fouls.
