Pomona-Pitzer Edges Willamette in California, 2-1

POMONA, CALIF. -- Pomona-Pitzer defeated Willamette University, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Sagehens improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Bearcats fell to 1-2.

Erik Kaufman (Fr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) scored Willamette's goal. It was Kaufman's second goal of the season. He also scored in Willamette's 1-0 victory over crosstown rival Corban College on Aug. 30.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 1-0 lead 33:03 into the match, when David Martin scored on an assist from Andrew Stamm. The play began with the ball surrounded by a group of players. After the ball went to Martin, he dribbled then shot past WU goalkeeper Mark Bennett (So., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS).

Kaufman's goal tied the score at 63:00. he scored on a rebound off of Pomona-Pitzer goalie Charlie Balter.

The Sagehens gained the lead for good on a goal by Andrew Jacobson less than two minutes after Kaufman scored. Jacobsen headed the ball into the net on a corner kick play. Martin received an assist.

Pomona-Pitzer registered 21 shots, including 11 shots on goal. Willamette took six total shots and had five shots on target. Bennett was credited with nine saves for the Bearcats, while Balter earned four saves for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Bearcats will play at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., on Sunday, Sept. 7. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (PDT).
