Starr Scores 11th Goal of Season, Carballo Scores 8th, in Defeat at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Jett Starr (Sr., F, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) earned his team-leading 11th goal of the season for Willamette University and Lucas Carballo (Fy., F, Riverside, CA/Bloomington HS) scored his eighth goal of the year, but Whitworth University defeated the Bearcats 6-2 on Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Whitworth Soccer Field. Carballo scored on a penalty kick in the first half and Starr hit the net with a shot late in the second half.

The Pirates upped their record to 11-4-3 overall, 9-2-3 in the NWC. Willamette slipped to 7-10-1 on the season, 7-6-1 in the NWC.

Cole Friesen of Whitworth scored three goals for a hat trick and added two assists. Beckett Arthur added two goals for the Pirates.

Whitworth surged out to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Arthur registered the first two goals at 13:11 and 18:11, with Friesen assisting on both goals. Friesen scored his first goal of the game at 19:42 with an assist by Clayton Crockett.

A foul called against Whitworth in the penalty area just 1:08 later allowed Carballo to shoot from the penalty spot. He sent the penalty kick into the right side of the goal. Carballo tallied three goals this weekend, including a brace (two goals) at Whitman in the Bearcats' 4-3 win on Saturday.

The Pirates continued to hold a 3-1 advantage at halftime. Eric Shaporda added a goal for Whitworth early in the second half at 48:18 on an assist from Cade Martin. Friesen scored at 57:06 on an assisted shot to give Whitworth a 5-1 lead.

Starr scored Willamette's second goal at 86:50 on a 6-yard redirection of a short pass by Krisna LaFrance (Jr., F, Seattle, WA/Ballard HS). LaFrance received the ball on a cross from the right side by Evan Mariscal (Fy., F/M, Gilroy, CA/Monte Vista HS). LaFrance controlled the ball with one touch and then sent the ball a few yards to his right to Starr.

Friesen concluded the scoring with a goal for Whitworth at 87:11.

For Willamette, Starr has increased his career scoring total to 22 goals and three assists for 47 total points. He has scored a goal in 11 of Willamette's last 14 games.

The Pirates outshot the Bearcats 23-12 and held a 13-5 margin in shots on goal. Willamette finished with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Pierluca Carnovale (Sr., GK, Seattle, WA/Ballard HS) made seven saves for the Bearcats. Whitworth goalie Aiden Chase achieved three saves.

Willamette will take on Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Sparks Field in Salem, Oregon. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. PDT.
