Ferguson Honored as NWC Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week

SALEM, ORE. -- Cody Ferguson (Fr., North Bend, OR/Western Oregon University) from Willamette University has been named Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week, after helping the Bearcats win conference matches on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1. The wins improved Willamette to 4-1 on the season, 4-1 in the NWC.

Ferguson achieved a 2-0 record in singles and a 2-0 record in doubles during the week. He defeated Spencer Hing of Pacific University, 6-4, 6-2, at #3 singles on Saturday in WU's 6-3 victory over the Boxers, On Sunday, he played #2 singles and downed Luke Wheeler of Lewis & Clark College in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Willamette defeated L&C, 7-2.

In doubles, Ferguson was paired with Micah Mack (Jr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatche HS) at #2 doubles versus Pacific and #1 doubles against Lewis & Clark. Ferguson and Mack defeated Michael Okada and Eric Furuya of Pacific, 8-3, and outscored Vincent Groot and Peter Ray of L&C, 8-4.

Following the weekend matches, Ferguson's singles record for the season was 4-1. Ferguson and Mack were 5-0 in doubles.

Up next for the Bearcats is a Northwest Conference home match against Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, March 6. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (PST) at the Courthouse Tennis Club (1339 Madison NE) in Salem, Ore. Willamette is currently third in the NWC standings at 4-1 and PLU is fourth at 6-2 (6-3 overall).
