SALEM, ORE. -- Michael Baumgartner (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) from the Willamette University men's tennis team has been named First Team Capitol One Academic All-District VIII on the college division men's at-large team, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Baumgartner was one of just 11 student-athletes from a variety of sports who were named to the Academic All-District Team.
CoSIDA District VIII includes colleges and universities in the western United States. Players nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team were starters or key reserves with cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher (4.0 scale). Each athlete was at his current college or university for at least one academic year.
The College Division includes athletes in NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. Willamette is a member of NCAA Division III and competes in the Northwest Conference.
Athletes were eligible for the men's at-large team if they competed in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo or wrestling.
Baumgartner owned a 4.00 cumulative grade point average through the 2010 fall semester. He has not yet declared a major.
This spring, Baumgartner played primarily #1 singles and #1 doubles for the Bearcats, helping Willamette achieve a 13-6 overall record. The Bearcats achieved an 11-1 Northwest Conference record, placed second in the NWC during the regular season and took second place at the NWC Tournament.
Baumgartner was 10-9 in singles, including 8-4 in the Northwest Conference, this season. In doubles, he went 10-10 overall, 9-3 in the NWC. He was named First Team All-NWC for the second consecutive season.
During two spring seasons at Willamette, Baumgartner has achieved a 21-19 singles record. He has a 24-18 combined record over the past two years in doubles.
In singles, Baumgartner was ranked #28 in the West Region this spring. He helped the Bearcats earn a #11 team ranking in the West Region in 2010-11 after contributing to a #10 regional ranking in 2009-10.
The Bearcats were particularly strong in singles this year. Led by Baumgartner, Willamette rallied in five matches during the season when trailing after the doubles competition.
