Wong Sweeps #1 Singles, Teams with Wexman for Shutout at #1 Doubles
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Willamette University won two doubles matches and four singles matches, as the Bearcats moved past Linfield College, 6-3, in Northwest Conference men's tennis action at the Linfield Tennis Center on Saturday, March 2.
Senior Joshua Wong (Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette swept through the #1 singles match, as he defeated Micah Roos, 6-0, 6-0. Wong and teammate Sam Wexman (Fr., Tiburon, CA/Gamiscal HS) also won #1 doubles without losing a game. They downed Roos and Joel Trousdale, 8-0.
In addition, Willamette achieved wins at #3, #4 singles and #5 singles, as well as #3 doubles.
Mathew Dees (Fr., Henderson, NV/Coronado HS) and Gunnar Lee (Fr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School) provided Willamette's victory at #3 doubles. They outscored Ben Brewer and Tim Hawkins, 8-4.
Zachery Lyons and Lukas Kleinman of Linfield won #2 doubles over Will Cooper (Jr., Gresham, OR/Centennial HS) and Devin Abney (So., Shoreline, WA/Shorecrest HS/Univ. of Redlands), 8-6.
Abney won for the Bearcats at #3 singles, as he downed Tim Hawkins, 6-3, 6-2. At #4 singles, Dees of WU outlasted Alex Mangan of Linfield, 6-3, 7-6 (6-3). Jack Schreiber (So., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) of WU prevailed at #5 singles against Joel Trousdale, 6-0, 6-0.
Linfield's two wins in singles were earned by Lyons at the #2 position and by Kleinman at the #6 position. Lyons edged out Cooper in the first set, 6-4, before winning the second set, 6-2. Kleinman defeated Lee, also by set scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Willamette will return to action on Friday, March 8 against Lewis-Clark State College from Idaho. Match time has not yet been determined.
