Willamette Earns Wins at #2 and #3 Singles as well as #1 Doubles
SALEM, ORE. -- Schreiner University (Texas) won four of six singles matches on its way to a 6-3 victory over Willamette University in a non-conference men's tennis match on Wednesday, March 18 at the WU Tennis Courts. Schreiner improved to 5-8 on the season, while Willamette dropped to 2-5.
Willamette fell to 2-4 on the season. The Bearcats are 2-3 in the NWC.
The Mountaineers gained a 2-1 lead in doubles, but Willamette won the #1 doubles match, as Gunnar Lee (Jr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph HS) and Jacob Blaisdell (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) downed Nick Pena and Austin Carrola, 8-4.
Schreiner's #2 doubles team of Stephen Rogers and Dayton Hancock defeated Jack Schreiber (Sr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) and Blake Brash (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) of Willamette, 8-1. Teg Lozano and Isaac Vasquez of Schreiner outscored Samuel Rowe (Fr., Andover, MA/Andover HS) and Jesse Mackinney (Fr., Arcata, CA/Northcoast Prep. & Performing Arts Acad.) at #3 doubles, 8-4.
The #1 singles match was won by Pena of SU, as he rallied past Lee, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. At #2 singles, Schreiber picked up a victory for the Bearcats as he held off Carrola, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. WU also triumphed at #3 singles, with Blake Brash (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) easily moving past Stephen Rogers, 6-1, 6-0.
Schreiner added wins at #4, #5 and #6 singles. The #4 match went three sets, before Hancock outlasted Blaisdell, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Josh Ramirez prevailed at #5 singles over Rowe of Willamette, 6-0, 6-1. At #6 singles, Christian Casillas of SU defeated Derek Crain (Fr., Port Angeles, WA/Port Angeles HS) in a pro set, 8-3.
Willamette plays at home again on Friday, March 20, when the Bearcats will host University of the Ozarks (Ark.). Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. (PDT).
