Pirates Defeat Bearcats 9-0, in NWC Men's Tennis Match

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth University defeated Willamette University, 9-0, in Northwest Conference men's tennis action on Sunday, March 12 at the Scotford Tennis Center. With the victory, the Pirates improved to 5-4 on the season, 5-2 in the NWC. Willamette slipped to 1-6 overall, 1-5 in the NWC.

The Bearcats competed shorthanded due to injuries and only had four healthy players for the match.

Whitworth gained a 3-0 lead in doubles. The Pirates' team of Drew Brigham and Drew Adams outscored Aaron Schechter (Fr., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) and Colin Yamaguchi (Sr./Jr., Clackamas, OR/Clackamas HS) at #1 doubles, 8-2.

Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes won for Whitworth at #2 doubles 8-2 over Jesse Mackinney (Arcata, CA/Northcoast Preparatory and Performing Arts Academy) and Derek Lund (So., Helena, MT/Capital HS) at #2 doubles. Whitworth won by default at #3 doubles.

Brigham took the #1 singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Schechter. At #2 singles, Blake Miller was able to defeat Yamaguchi 6-0, 6-1. Also winning for the Pirates were Layne Ryerson at #3 singles and Drew Adams at #4 singles.

Willamette will return to action on Friday, March 18 with a home match against Treasure Valley Community College. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m. (PDT) at the WU Tennis Courts.
