VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Portland State University downed Willamette University, 7-0, in men's tennis on Saturday, Jan. 21 on indoor courts at Club Green Meadows. The match was played using NCAA Division I scoring rules, in which the team team winning two or all three doubles matches receives one point. Each singles match also was worth one point.
Portland State, which competes in NCAA Division I and the Big Sky Conference, evened its record at 1-1. Willamette, playing its season opener, fell to 0-1. The Bearcats compete in NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.
The Vikings won each of the doubles matches. At #1 doubles, Nathan Boniel and Tommy Edwards of PSU defeated Aaron Schechter (So., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) and Gunnar Lee (Sr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School), 8-2.
In #2 doubles, Scott Goldner and Russell Risenhoover moved past Willamtte's Hunter Yee (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) and Colin Fisher (Fr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School). The #3 doubles match was won by PSU's Ethan Lopez and Sam Larson over Derek Lund (Jr., Helena, MT/Capital HS) and Samuel Rowe (Jr./So., Andover, MA/Andover HS of WU, 8-3.
PSU also swept the singles matches. Boniel won at #1 singles over Schechter, 6-0, 6-3. Lopez defeated Lee at #2 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
Risenhoover prevailed at #4 singles against Fisher, 6-2, 6-2. Lund won five games for WU at #5 singles, but Yousef Abdo won the match, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bearcats will play their home opener on Sunday, Jan. 29 in a Northwest Conference match against Lewis & Clark College. The action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (PST).
