PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College, ranked #33 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division III Poll defeated Willamette University 9-0 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis contest on Saturday, March 11, at the L&C Tennis Dome.
The Pioneers improved both their overall and conference records to 8-0, and are the only team in the NWC with an undefeated overall record. The Bearcats fell to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the NWC.
L&C, which swept the season series with Willamette, gained an early advantage in the doubles matches.
At #1 doubles, the Pioneers' Gordon Barrows and Brenden Barrows earned an 8-2 victory over Aaron Schechter (So., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) and Gunnar Lee (Sr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph School). Ben DeLuca and Jackson Powell won by the same score against Jesse Mackinney (Jr., Arcata, CA/Northcoast Preparatory and Performing Arts Academy) and Derek Lund (Jr., Helena, MT/Capital HS) at #3 doubles.
Michael Brewer and Raed Attia defeated Colin Fisher (Fr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) and Hunter Yee (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) at the #2 doubles spot, 8-0.
Lewis & Clark won all six singles matches in straight sets, with no Bearcat winning more than three games in any set.
At #1 singles, Gordon Barrows defeated Lee, 6-3, 6-0, while Powell downed Schechter, 6-1, 6-2 at #2. At #3 singles, Brenden Barrows shut down Yee, 6-0, 6-1.
DeLuca and Lund matched up at #4, with DeLuca taking a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Brendan Adams earned the win at #5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Keane Hindle grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Mackinney at the final singles spot.
Willamette will be back in action on Sunday, March 12, at 11 a.m. (PDT), taking on Pacific Lutheran University. If possible, the match will be played at the WU Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the competition will move indoors to the Salem Tennis and Swim Club.
