FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Pacific University defeated Willamette University, 8-1, in a non-conference men's tennis match on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Holce Tennis Courts. Andrew Kabacy (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS) of Willamette won a tight match at #1 singles over Jonathan Chung, but the Boxers won the remaining singles matches and all three doubles matches. Pacific moved to 1-0, whlle Willamette opened the season at 0-1.
Kabacy edged out Chung after rallying from a set down. Chung took the opening set, 6-4, but Kabacy grabbed the second set by a convincing 6-1 margin. The match was decided by a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set. A super tie-breaker continues until one player reaches 10 points, but the win must be by two points. Kabacy and Chung battled in the tiebreaker until Kabacy prevailed, 14-12.
The Boxers won each of the other singles matches in straight sets. At #2 singles, Reyn Miyagawa downed Colin Fisher (Jr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School), 6-0, 6-2. Quentin Gonzalez won #3 singles over Aaron Schechter (Sr., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) of Willamette, 6-0, 6-1.
Pacific registered identical 8-1 wins in all three doubles matches. Koby Murata and Rayden Murata were victorious at #1 doubles, while Miyagawa and Joey Hu won #2 doubles. At #3 doubles, the winners were Sean Murphy and Griffin Fraser.
Willamette will host Pacific Lutheran University in a non-conference match on Sunday, Sept. 30. Match time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
