SALEM, Ore. -- The Willamette University men's tennis team swept past the Oregon State University Club, 9-0, in an exhibition match on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club. Willamette lost just six games in doubles and won all 12 sets in singles.
At #1 doubles, Willamette's team of Andrew Kabacy (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS) and Aaron Schechter (Sr., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS) defeated B. Wenndert and I. Goshay from the OSU Club, 8-4. The #2 doubles match was won by Colin Fisher (Jr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) and Gene Perle-Jones (Jr., Eugene, OR/North Eugene HS) for the Bearcats, 8-1, against M. Magnello and S. Ho. In #3 doubles, Luke Hiserman (So., Monterey, CA/Pacific Grove HS) and Charles Pezeshki (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), easily downed B. Moore and L. Parvin, 8-1.
Willamette's sweep in singles was led by Kabacy, who prevailed at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, against N. Weaver. Schechter breezed through #2 singles versus B. Lee, 6-0, 6-1. Fisher did not lose a game at #3 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over B. Kirim.
The #4 singles match was won by Perle-Jones of Willamette against N. Warahekar from the OSU Club, 6-2, 6-0. At #5 singles, Hiserman rolled past K. Pham, 6-1, 6-2. Endy Zarate (Sr., Salem, OR/McKay HS) took #6 singles by holding off M. Magnello in the first set, 6-4, and then winning the second set, 6-1.
Up next for Willamette is an exhibition match against Bellevue College (Wash.), a two-year college, on Friday, Feb. 22. Game time is set for 5 p.m. (PST) at the WU Tennis Courts or at Salem Tennis and Swim Club if weather forces the match indoors. Willamette will take on Lewis & Clark College in a non-conference match between Northwest Conference rivals on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Portland, Oregon.
