OAKLAND, Calif. -- Holy Names University earned the double point and won all six singles matches to claim a 7-0 win against Willamette University on Sunday, March 24 at the Meyer Tennis Courts. The match was scored using NCAA Division II rules in which the winner of two or all three doubles matches receives one point. Also, each doubles match was one set to six wins, rather than one pro-set.

Holy Names competes in NCAA Division II and the PacWest Conference. The Hawks, who are ranked #8 in the West Region, improved to 4-7 on the season. Willamette is a member of NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats fell to 1-8 overall.

The Hawks won each of the doubles matches. At #1, Hugo Colpart and Alex Vinee-Munoz downed Andrew Kabacy (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS) and Aaron Schechter (Sr., Seattle, WA/James A. Garfield HS), 6-2. In the #2 match, John Giesberts and Valentin Baranyi of HNU defeated Colin Fisher (Jr., Caldwell, ID/Thomas Jefferson Charter School) and Gene Perle-Jones (Jr., Eugene, OR/North Eugene HS) of WU, 6-3. At #3 doubles, Vincent Hennebelle and Javier Luque moved past Luke Hiserman (So., Monterey, CA/Pacific Grove HS) and Charles Pezeshki (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), 6-1.

In singles, Holy Names won at five matches in straight sets. At #3 singles, however, Giesberts needed a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set to edge past Fisher. Giesberts won the first set, 6-3, but Fisher rallied for a 7-5 triumph on the second set. The tie-breaker went to Giesberts, 10-5.

At #2 singles, Vinee-Munoz kept Schechter just out of reach by winning both sets by a 6-3 score. Also earning wins for HNU in singles, were Colpart at #1, Hennebelle at #4, Giovanni Fragalle at #5, and Philip Achenbach at #6.

Willamette will conclude its three-mach road trip on Monday, March 25 at Chabot College in Hayward, California. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (PST).

Big Moment of the Match for Willamette

Colin Fisher won the second set at #2 singles, 7-5, against
Alex Vinee-Munoz of Holy Names. Vinee-Munoz won the first
set, 6-3. After Fisher evened the match at one set apiece, a
super tie-breaker was played to decide the match. Vinee-Munoz
prevailed in the super tie-breaker, 10-5, to hold off Fisher.
