Kabacy Takes #1-Seed Miyagawa into Third Set before Losing at ITA Regional

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Andrew Kabacy (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS) of Willamette University battled with #1-seed Reyn Miyagawa from Pacific University into a third set in the championship singles Round of 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Regional Championships on Sunday, Sept. 19. All three sets were close, with Miyagawa winning the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Miyagawa also won in the quarterfinals and will take on Luke Lemaitre of George Fox University in the semifinals on Monday morning at 9 a.m. (PDT). The singles championship match will be played on Monday at 1 p.m.

In addition to Kabacy competing in the championship singles bracket, three Bearcats played on Sunday in the first round of the consolation singles bracket. Consolation matches in singles required four wins in each set, with a super tie-breaker played if competitors split the first two sets.

Andrew Kropp (Jr., Bend, OR/Summit HS) of Willamette fell to Aaron Yuan of Whitman College, 4-1, 4-0. Jordan Megiveron (Jr., Edmonds, WA/Edmonds-Woodway HS) of the Bearcats was defeated by Matthew Chio of Lewis & Clark College, 4-0, 4-0. Will Worth of Linfield University downed Kai Kumra (Jr., Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman HS) of Willamette, 4-1, 4-0. The Bearcats are not scheduled to compete in any additional matches during the tournament. They will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 with a dual match against Linfield starting at 11 a.m. (PDT) in McMinnville, Oregon. 

The ITA Northwest Regional is being hosted by George Fox. In addition to the semifinals and championship match in singles, Monday's schedule will include the doubles championship match at 4 p.m. (PDT). Consolation play also will end on Monday.
