SALEM, Ore. -- Andre Lief (Fy., Anchorage, AK/West Anchorage HS) and Trey Allen (Fy., Tucson, AZ/BASIS Tucson North HS) from Willamette University took Pacific Lutheran University's #2 doubles team of Derek Stone and Caleb Grass into a tie-breaker during their match on Saturday, April 9 at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club. Stone and Grass edged out Lief and Allen in a close extra session, 8-6, to win the set, 8-7.
The Lutes won the overall match 9-0 after sweeping the three doubles and six singles positions. Joining Stone and Gras as winners in doubles for PLU were Michael Campbell and Hampus Pers Eliason at #1 and Alex Richter and Drew Kraft at #3.
In the top singles match, Campbell downed Quentin Nigbur (Jr., Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) of WU, 6-0, 6-1. At #2 singles, Pers Eliason of PLU held off Andrew Kropp (Jr., Bend, OR/Summit HS) in the first set, 6-4, before taking the second set, 6-1. Stone prevailed for the Lutes at #3 singles, with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Lief. Other winners for PLU in singles were Richter at #5 and Samuel Kwon at #6. Kwon won the first set 6-1, but Jesus Barocio Garibay (So., Salem, OR/McKay HS) of Willamette was leading the second set 2-1 when Barocio Garibay had to retire due to an injury.
PLU improved to 4-5 overall, 2-4 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell to 0-7 on the season, 0-5 in the NWC.
Willamette will host the University of Puget Sound in an NWC match on Sunday, April 10. The action is likely to be indoors at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club. Match time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
