Glasgo Throws 2-Hitter in 6-0 Win over Puget Sound; Loggers Take 2nd Game, 7-6

TACOMA, Wash. -- Jocelyn Glasgo (So., P/OF, Rochester, WA/Tumwater HS) of Willamette University pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Bearcats to a 6-0 victory over University of Puget Sound in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 21. Puget Sound held off Willamette in the second game, 7-6.

The Bearcats concluded their season with a 6-29 overall record, including 6-22 in the NWC, Puget Sound ended its year at 11-26-1 overall, 9-19 in the NWC.

On Saturday, Willamette scored 13 runs during the doubleheader and played extremely well in the opener. Eight Bearcats each contributed at least one hit during the afternoon.

"I'm so proud of how these players finished the season," Willamette Head Coach Damian Williams said. "Jocelyn threw a great game and we played awesome defense behind her. Everyone contributed on offense and it made it lots of fun."

Glasgo's Complete Game Helps Bearcats Defeat Loggers, 6-0

In the first game, Glasgo took control and kept Puget Sound struggling at the plate in the 6-0 win. Glasgo struck out seven batters and did not allow a walk. The Willamette defense committed just one error during the game, while the offense took advantage of eight hits and four errors by the Loggers.

Both of Puget Sound's hits were in the fourth inning, on a double by Jessica Gott with one out, followed by a single from Erica Gott. A ground out by Camille Goo and a strikeout by Marissa Oda ended the threat.

The Bearcats already led 5-0 when the Loggers achieved their hits. Willamette took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, when Emily Bishop (Jr., OF, Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma HS/Pierce College) hit a leaoff single, stole second and then scored with one out when Glasgo hit into an error by the shortstop. Glasgo went to third on the play, but consecutive outs left her standed.

In the second inning, Willamette plated two runs. With one out Danielle Koontz (Fr., 2B, Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista HS) was hit by a pitch. She stole second base. Breianna Mcleod (Fr., SS/UT, Kailua Kona, HI/West Hawaii Explorations Acad.) also was hit by a pitch. An error on a double-steal led to Koontz crossing the plate, while Mcleod ended up at third. Mcleod scored on a single by Olivia Scott (So., C, San Francisco, CA/Lowell HS).

Willamette tacked on a pair of runs in the third. Maya Shipway (So., 1B, Bothell, WAThe Bear Creek School) doubled ot center to start the frame. After Shipway stole third, Kea Gier (So., 3B, Kaneohe, HI/Iolani School) hit an RBI single to right. One out later, Gier stole second and then crossed the plate when an error at third allowed Mcleod to reach base.

The game's final run went to Koontz in the fifth inning. She walked, and scored three batters later on a single to center by Bishop. For the game, Bishop was 3 of 4 with a run and an RBI. Sofia Magnani (So., P/OF, Belmont, CA/Notre Dame HS) went 2 of 4 for the Bearcats. Koontz scored two of the six runs.

Loggers Win High-Scoring Second Game, 7-6

Puget Sound won the second game, 7-6, on the strenghth of five runs in the second inning for a 6-3 led, plus solid defense by the Loggers while Erica Gott pitched the last four innings. The teams pounded out a total of 19 hits, with 10 for Willamette and nine for Puget Sound.

WU pushed across three runs in the top of the first. With one out, Bailey Hillmick (Fr., DP/UT, Athena, OR/Weston-McEween HS) went to first bae on an error. After Hilmick stole second, Glasgo singled throught he left isde. Hillmick scored on a double-steal and Glasgo reached home when Magnani belted an double to right. Magnani stole third, and score don a ground out to second by Shipway.

Erica Gott hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second to reduce the lead to 3-1. The Loggers scored five runs on two hits and two errors in the second inning. Jessica Gott drove in four of the runs with a grand slam.

The Bearcats responded with two runs in the third to pull within 6-5. Glasgo earned a base hit and eventually scored on an RBI single by Shipway during the inning. Magnani, who walked after Glasgo's single, scored the other run when Shipway was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Gier.

Puget Sound added an insurance for a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Erica Gott. Willamette opened the seventh inning with a double by Bishop. She went to third on a ground out and scored on a single through the right side by Glasgo. Magnani doubled through the left side, but Glasgo was thrown out a third. Erica Gott forced Shipway to ground out to the circle to end the game.

Glasgo was 3 of 4 with two runs and an RBI. Magnani went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. Bishop was 2 of 4 with a double and one run. For Puget Sound, Jessica Gott went 2 of 4 with her grand slam, while Erica Gott was 2 of 4 with two RBIs. Amber Popovich finished 2 of 3 with three runs and an RBI.
