Academy of Art Defeats Corban in Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic

SALEM, ORE. -- Jessica Nolan scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Academy of Art University to a 93-73 victory over Corban University in the first game of the 2nd Annual Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic on Friday, Nov. 26 at Cone Field House. Academy of Art improved to 1-3 on the season, while Corban fell to 1-4.

The Academy of Art will take on host Willamette University in the second game of the Capital City Classic on Saturday, Nov. 27. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PST).

During most of the first half, the game was close. The Urban Knights took a 6-2 lead, but Corban eventually moved in front 11-10.

The Warriors held their largest lead at 21-17 with 8:28 left in the half. Four straight points by the Academy of Art led to the fifth tie of the game. The Urban Knights pulled in front, 23-21, on a jumper by Verity Peets at the 7:01 mark, but Corban answered with a 5-0 run to regain the lead.

Academy of Art responded with seven consecutive points of its own to claim a 30-26 advantage. Jennesa Miller tallied the next basket for Corban to cut the lead to two, but the Urban Knights closed the half with a 15-3 run. AOAU held a 45-31 lead at the intermission and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Nolan's 17 points included 7-for-10 field goal shooting and her 11 rebounds featured seven defensive boards. She also earned six assists and two steals for Academy of Art.

Devin London added 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Urban Knights. Lorraine Etchell contributed 12 points, while Alisa Griggs supplied 11 points and six boards. Peets ended the game with 10 rebounds, helping the Urban Knights attain a 49-40 rebounding edge.

Katie Steigleman and Tess Bennett achieved 19 points apiece for Corban. Bennett also grabbed 10 rebounds, while Steigleman earned a game-high five steals. Miller provided the Warriors with 15 points, seven boards, four assists and three steals.

The Urban Knights shot 53.0% on field goals during the game (35 of 66). Corban connected on 35.9% of its field goals (28 of 78), but made just 4 of 21 three-pointers (19.0%). The Academy of Art was 5 of 14 from 3-point range (35.7%).
