HAYWARD, CALIF. -- California State University-East Bay scored twice in the first 22 minutes and the Pioneers went on to defeat visiting Willamette University, 3-1, on Friday, Sept. 12. CSU-East Bay improved to 4-2 on the season, while Willamette dropped to 1-1. It was WU's first match since a 1-0 victory over Oregon Institute of Technology on Aug. 29.

The Pioneers took a quick 1-0 lead ona goal by Britanie Strei at the 5:32 mark. CSU-East Bay increased the lead at 22:00, when Michelle Quintero hit the net. Strei added her second goal of the game at 67:06, before Willamette struck with a goal by Kimber Mattox (Fr., MF, Bend, OR/Cornell University).

Kelli Gano (So., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) of Willamette recorded 11 saves in the loss. Koree Palmer made four saved in the win for CSU-EB.

The Pioneers outshot Willamette, 23-8, including a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. Michelle Garcia led CSU-EB with six shots. Rachel Janny (Jr., F, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) created four shots for Willamette, including three requiring saves by Palmer. East Bay achieved a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Willamette's three-game trip to California will continue on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the University of Redlands on a neutral field at the University of California-Santa Cruz. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT). WU will take on UC-Santa Cruz on Monday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m. (PDT).
