Whitworth Edges Willamette in NWC Battle, 1-0

SPOKANE, WASH. -- Whitworth University won a defensive battle with Willamette University, 1-0, in a Northwest Conference game on Sunday, Oct. 4. Sidonia Davin recorded the game's only goal in the first half. Whitworth improved to 9-2 overall, 6-1 in the NWC. Willamette went to 4-5-1 overall, 3-3 in the NWC.

Willamette outshot Whitworth 8-7 during the game, including a 4-2 advantage in the first half. Even so, Davin's goal gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead at the break.

Lindsey Oakes set up the goal with a long pass. Davin was able to get to the ball before a defender and goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Jr., Portland, OR/Grant HS). Davin shot the ball from the top-right corner of the penalty area at 15:18.

Whitworth goalie Callie Bergstrom made three saves in recording the shutout. Jill Schneeman (So., GK, Burien, WA/Mount Rainier HS), who played the final 45 minutes in goal for Willamette, also registered three saves.

Andrea Rowan (Fr., MF, Boise, ID/Timberline HS), Haley Rosenthal (Sr., MF, Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne East HS) and Alex Batzer (Jr., F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) each took two shots for Willamette. Jenny Krzymowski earned three shots for Whitworth.

Both teams had four shots on target. Whitworth held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, but Willamette achieved a 3-1 margin in the second half. The Pirates were called for 18 fouls, while the Bearcats picked up just nine fouls.

Willamette will host Pacific University on Saturday, Oct. 10 as part of WU's Parents and Family Weekend. Game time at Sparks Field is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
