Bearcats Shutout Whitman, 2-0 in Women's Soccer

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's soccer team defeated Whitman College, 2-0, on Saturday, Oct. 2. Willamette improved to 4-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman fell to 4-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the NWC.

Freshman Sabine Wetzel (MF, Martinez, CA/Campolindo HS) scored early for Willamette. Wetzel scored on a header in the 10th minute. She was assisted by Alex Batzer (Sr., F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS). The goal was the second of Wetzel's career.

Willamette added its second goal in the 75th minute on another header. Stephanie Skelly (Jr., MF, Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS) found the back of the goal for her fifth tally of the season. Skelly was assisted by Batzer and Andrea Rowan (So., MF, Boise, ID/Timberline HS).

Senior Kelli Gano (GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) earned the win in goal for WU. She played all 90 minutes and recorded five saves. Whitman's Lauren Brougham earned the loss in goal. She made two saves, but allowed two goals.

Willamette is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 at home against Whitworth University. The game will begin at 12 p.m. (PDT) at Sparks Field.
