Women's Soccer Secures 2-0 Victory over Lutes

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's soccer team defeated the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran University, 2-0, on Sunday, Oct. 10. Willamette moved to 5-7-0 overall and to 4-4-0 in the Northwest Conference. PLU is now 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the NWC.

After playing to a 0-0 tie through the first half, freshman Sabine Wetzel (MF, Martinez, CA/Campolindo HS) scored her third goal of the season to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Wetzel re-directed a pass from Maddy Grainger (So., F, Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) to score the goal. Grainger has three assists this season.

Senior Alex Batzer (F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) added a second goal for Willamette in the 81st minute. Batzer was assisted by Elena Johansen (So., D, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) on the play. The goal was Batzer's fourth of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) earned the shutout in goal for WU. She made one save in the game as she earned her second shutout of the season.

The Bearcats attempted 10 shots in the game with five shots being on goal. Willamette controlled the ball for most of the game and limited PLU to just two shot attempts, one of those on goal.

Willamette is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at home against Linfield College. The game will begin at 5 p.m. (PDT) at Sparks Field.
