SALEM, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half on a goal by Taylor Hudson and added an insurance goal by Emily Thompson with 3:21 left in the game, as the Pioneers defeated Willamette University, 3-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Sparks Field.

L&C upped its record to 4-6-2 on the season, 4-3-2 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette fell to 4-8-1 overall, 2-6-1 in the NWC.

The Pioneers opened the scoring 4:50 into the game when Anna Thorndike put in a header following a 30-yard free kick by Emilia Emmetti.

Willamette tied the score less than 12 minutes later when Paige Lancourt (Jr., MF, Eagle, ID/Eagle HS) shot the ball from 18 yards into an empty net after L&C goalkeeper Geena Fong rushed out to stop a break-away opportunity. Ariel Wilson (Sr., MF, Fort Collins, CO/Poudre HS) earned an assist for the Bearcats.

Hudson earned the game-winning goal at 67:08 on a shot from just two yards out near the middle of the net. The play was set up by Kylie Carera, who worked her way to the end line and went a few yards into the penalty area before sending a low crossing pass into the center.

Thompson added the insurance goal at 86:39 to give L&C a 3-1 lead. She shot from 12 yards out, sending the ball toward the left side of the goal. Prior to her shot, Thompson received a through pass near the top of Willamette's defensive box in the middle of the field. Carera, who provided the through pass, earned an assist on the play.

Willamette created several chances to tie the score prior to Thompson's goal.

Shortly after the 71:00 mark, Kellie Standish (So., F, Redmond, WA/Eastside Catholic HS) made a run toward the right post. She redirected a cross from the right side, but the shot went just wide of the goal.

About a minute before Thompson scored, Ashland Bernard (So., F, Kirkland, WA/Juanita HS) of Willamette took two quick shots. The first shot was taken at 85:42 and was saved by Fong. Several seconds later, the ball went back to Bernard, whose shot went outside the left post.

Lewis & Clark outshot Willamette, 16-11 overall and held an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Willamette goalie Nicole Price (Jr., Auburn, WA/Thomas Jefferson HS) registered eight saves, including seven in the second half. Fong made one save for L&C. Willamette attained a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bearcats will play at home again on Saturday, Oct. 13, when nearby rival George Fox University will arrive at Sparks Field for a Northwest Conference game. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
