Earns Two Shutouts as Willamette Defeats Lutes and Boxers
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University goalkeeper Emily Sewall (So., Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) has been chosen as the Northwest Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week after helping the Bearcats defeat Pacific Lutheran University on Nov. 7 and Pacific University on Nov. 8.
Sewall played every minute in goal as Willamette defeated the Lutes 1-0 in regulation and downed the Boxers 1-0 in two overtimes. Pacific Lutheran held sole possession of the first place in the NWC before losing to the Bearcats.
Willamette went 2-0-1 in its final three games to move into seventh place in the NWC at 3-11-2 (11 points). The Bearcats ended the year at 4-14-2 overall.
Sewell recorded seven saves against Pacific Lutheran, as the Bearcats won despite the Lutes claiming a 17-9 edge in total shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. McKenzie Andringa (Jr., MF, Yakima, WA/La Salle HS) scored at 28:14 on an assist from Malia Simpson (Sr., MF, Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) for the 1-0 win.
In the win over Pacific, Sewall achieved three saves for Willamette. Sarah Desautels (Sr., MF/F, Snohomish, WA/Glacier Park HS) registered the game's only goal 51 seconds into the second overtime after receiving a lengthy pass from Kelsey Walker (Fr., MF, Westerville, OH/Westerville North HS). WU outshot the Boxers 17-7 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal.
For the season, Sewall earned six shutouts. She contributed 68 saves while playing 1,761 minutes for the Bearcats.
