Corban Scores in Final Minute to Edge Bearcats, 1-0, in Women's Soccer

SALEM, Ore. -- Sadee Kallis of Corban University scored with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to send the Warriors to a 1-0 victory over Willamette University in a non-conference women's soccer game on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Sparks Field. Corban improved to 2-1 on the season. Willamette, playing its regular season opener, fell to 0-1.

The Bearcats outshot the Warriors 14-9 in total shots and 9-6 in shots on goal. Willamette had several quality chances in the final 15 minutes before Corban recorded the game's only goal.

Marley Duncan (So., F, Pukalani, HI/Kamehameha School) received a low cross from the left side and redirected the ball over the crossbar from close range at 76:30. McKenzie Andringa (Sr., M/D, Yakima, WA/La Salle HS) shot from 22 yards out on the right side at 84:10, but Corban goalie Sheyenne Brusven registered a save.

WU had two shots on corner kicks just a couple of minutes later. First, Duncan took a shot from just a few yards out at 86:33 that was knocked out of bounds by Brusven. On the ensuing corner kick, Kelsey Walker (So., M/GK, Westerville, OH/Westerville North HS) placed a header on goal. A Corban defender blocked the shot near the goal line.

Kallis earned the game's only goal on a counter-attack by the Warriors. Katelyn Fekkes passed the ball to Kallis on the right side of the field. As Kallis entered the penalty area, she shot the ball into the right side of the goal at 89:20.

Willamette controlled most of the first half, as the Bearcats outshot the Warriors 9-3, including 6-1 in shots on goal. Brusven achieved six of her eight saves in the first half.

The Warriors increased their attacking success in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Corban registered the first five shots of the half, including four shots that were saved by WU goalie Emily Sewall (Jr., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS). Sewall finished with five saves overall.

Duncan, Veronica Ewers (Sr., F, Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) and Kate Matthews (Fr., M, Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) each took three total shots for Willamette. Ewers, Matthews and Walker each placed two shots on goal.

For Corban, Emma Kosmala led the Warriors with three total shots. Kallis and Kosmala each took two shots on goal.

Willamette will remain at home to play the University of Redlands (Calif.) on Saturday, Sept. 5. Game time at Sparks Field in scheduled for 11 a.m. (PDT).
